Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

1. The CBCS

All Programmes (named after the Core subject) shall be run on Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). It is an instructional package developed to suit the needs of students to keep pace with the developments in higher education and the quality assurance expected of it in the light of liberalization and globalization in higher education.

2. Courses in Programmes

The UG programme consists of a number courses. The term “course” is applied to indicate a logical part of the subject matter of the programme and is invariably equivalent to the subject matter of a “paper” in the conventional sense. The following are the various categories of Courses suggested for the UG programmes.
Language Courses (LC) (any one of Tamil, Hindi, Sanskrit, French, Arabic, Urdu, etc), English Language Courses (ELC), Core Courses (CC), Allied Courses (AC), Elective Courses (EC) (instead of Applied Course in the curriculum followed earlier) and General Interest Course (GIC).
The Language Courses and English Language Courses are 4 each in number and the LC and ELC are meant to develop the students' communicative skill at the UG level. Core Courses are the basic courses compulsorily required for each of the programme of study. These will be related to the subject of the programme in which the candidate gets his / her degree. The number of Core Courses shall be 14. Allied Courses cover two disciplines that are generally related to the main subject of the programme. There shall be 6 Allied Courses.
The Elective Courses (EC), four in number for each UG degree, are open to all students irrespective of Science, Arts or Commerce Programmes. A student shall choose atleast two Elective Courses from outside his / her Department. It is also open to a student to choose all the four Elective Courses from outside his / her Department (Annexure).

Selection of students to the EC :

a. The Department Committee shall follow a selection procedure on a first come first served basis, fixing the maximum number of students, giving counselling to the students etc. to avoid overcrowding to particular course(s) at the expense of some other courses.
b. The failed candidates in one EC are permitted to opt for another EC in another programmeOr they are permitted to continue with the same EC.
c. The Colleges shall provide all information relating to the ECs in each programme to all the students so as to enable them to choose their ECs.
The student can choose any one of the two General Interest Courses : History of Science and Computer Applications. Computer Literates and those who select programmes related to Computer Science should opt only for History of Science.

3. The UGC recommended Certificate Course on Environmental Studies

The UGC recommended Certificate Course on Environmental Studies is to be offered in the second semester of all the UG Programmes outside the class hours.

4. Part IV – Extension and Extra-Curricular Activities :

Part IV – Extension and Extra-Curricular Activities : These should be carried out outside the class hours.

CONTINUOUS INTERNAL ASSESSMENT for the Student admitted from the academic year 2005 – 06 onwards
The courses offered under both day & evening sections follow Assessment semester pattern with continuous internal marks for CIA is 25 (Theory) and for external University Examinations is 75 for each paper. The 25 marks for CIA is distributed as follows :
1. TEST – 15 Marks (The average marks of best two out of three or four tests will be taken)
2. QUIZ / SEMINAR – 5 Marks (The best two out of three will be taken)
3. ASSIGNMENT – 5 Marks (The best two out of three will be taken)

NOTE :

1. Theory Internal 25 marks External 75 marks
2. Practical Internal 40 marks External 60 marks
3. Separate passing minimum is prescribed for Internal and External. The passing minimum for CIA shall be 40% out of 25 marks (i.e. 10 marks The passing minimum for University Examinations shall be 40% out of 75 marks (i.e. 30 marks) Excepting attendance, students will be given additional chances to improve the CIA marks by taking additional test or assignment as prescribed by the concerned teacher and Head of the Department. The students may appeal to the Principal
through HOD, for the redressal of any grievance in this regard. The Principal’s decision is final.

COLLEGE TESTS, EXAMINATIONS

Each Department will conduct composition, tests, examinations periodically. Common internal test in the university pattern will be held for all U.G & P.G students. Students absenting themselves from tests will be severely dealt with.
