T.B.M.L. College: Rooted in Mission, Glowing in Scholarship
Located in the historic town of Tranquebar, known as “The Queen of the Coromandel Coast,” T.B.M.L. College stands as a beacon of education and cultural legacy. Tranquebar’s rich heritage—shaped by Portuguese, Danish, French, and English influences—marks it as the birthplace of Protestant Christianity in India. It was here that missionaries Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau arrived on July 9, 1706, ushering in a new era of faith and service.
Inspired by this spiritual heritage, the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (T.E.L.C.), established the Tranquebar Bishop Manikam Lutheran College (T.B.M.L. College) on 19th June 1972 in Porayar, a humble village in the erstwhile Thanjavur District. The college was named in honour of Rt. Rev. Dr. R. B. Manikam, the first Indian Bishop of the Church.
Sanctioned by the Government of Tamil Nadu (G.O. No. 1888 dated 29.11.1972) and recognized by the Directorate of Collegiate Education, the college began its mission of social upliftment through education. Today, T.B.M.L. College is a thriving institution affiliated with Annamalai University, Chidambaram, offering 14 undergraduate, 12 postgraduate, and 8 research programmes (M.Phil. & Ph.D.).
Firmly rooted in its legacy and guided by a commitment to serve the marginalized, the college continues to nurture scholars, foster character, and build a better future.
